Nashville Woman Files Legal Challenge Against Local BBQ Joint
Key Points:
A woman from the local community has filed a lawsuit against Roy’s Meat Service, a meat market and barbeque restaurant situated in East Nashville. The plaintiff alleges that the aroma of grilling and smoked meats emanating from the establishment is causing a “nuisance.”
This presents a particular conundrum. While we understand her right to exist nasal-annoyance free, but aren’t we all entitled to our BBQ-fueled happiness too?
As reported by Newschannel 5, Natalie Castillo became a resident of the house next to the restaurant just two years ago. However, it appears that she may not have conducted thorough research, as Roy Meat Service has been delighting the neighborhood with their delicious grilled meats for the past nine years. Why would anyone be surprised when they choose to live next to a restaurant that serves delicious smoked meats? Personally, I believe this only adds to the property’s value, as you get to enjoy the delightful aroma of smoked meats throughout the day.
But the neighbor isn’t happy, and filed a lawsuit against the local business, alleging among other things that part of the restaurant encroaches on her property and that the smoke from the constant grilling is a nuisance. Castillo says in the complaint that the constant smoking of ribs, chicken and pork affect her “ability to enjoy her property as well as negatively affects her health.”

My Sassy Southern Hot Take:
Well, butter my buns and call me a biscuit, ain’t this a fine mess! Now I admit, a nonstop BBQ scent ticklin’ your nostrils could be a tad overbearin’, but darlin’ this is Nashville. BBQ is as much a part of us as our country tunes. Why, it’s like complaining about the smell of Grandma’s apple pie in the kitchen. As for Roy Meat Service’s, they’re smokin’ more than just ribs with this hoopla, they’re smokin’ their sales figures. And you know what they say – no publicity is bad publicity. So here’s to you, Ms. Castillo. For making a mountain out of a meatloaf, and inadvertently bestowing Roy Meat Service’s with the hottest marketing campaign, they’ve probably ever smoked!
